Services

DSSC continues to support the services of the Child Care Information Centre and to update the Directory of Services which gives a comprehensive listing of services available to children with special needs in the greater Cape Town area. Copies of the directory are available through the office.

The services of the toy library include the following:

An interpreter for isiXhosa speaking families who attend the toy library

Two self-advocates work in the toy library, providing the parents with "Hope for the future"

Counselling is provided by two Family Counsellors (registered Social Workers)

Information service for parents through talks, brochures or other media

Parenting advice and workshops

Sibling support workshops

An annual Christmas party for the children who attend the toy library

Outreach to poor communities in the form of self-help groups was started in Bonteheuwel, Atlantis and Fisantekraal. A mobile toy library provides for children at these Self-help Groups A mobile toy library has been started at the Khayelitsha Hospital for children living in Khayelitsha, thanks to the Speech Therapy, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Departments
