DSSC is a registered Non-Profit Organisation and Public Benefits Organisation and is run by a Board and Steering Committee consisting of parents and professionals. The organisation depends of funding to keep the services running.

Helping children.

Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy, are crucial therapies for a child born with an intellectual disability, but sadly, these therapies are not always available to the majority of families in South Africa. At the RCCH, however, there are referrals for children requiring these therapies and the Speech Therapy students from the University of Cape Town provide an invaluable service for the children when they are at the toy library. Almost all the children have delay in their speech, and parents are given advice and learn how to stimulate their child's speech and language development. The toy library is where children play to learn and this helps to prepare them for entry into school. It is gratifying that it has been possible to keep this vital service going, to help over 130 children every year at the toy library.
